My name is Will Estes and I strive to create beautiful, durable knives. I started making knives in my garage in late 2019, using any scraps that I could find around my yard, but I soon graduated to more advanced materials and techniques. Now I use more complicated metal alloys for my blades and many different compositions for my handles, and I work hard to improve every aspect of my process.
Before I start working on a new knife, I always think about its purpose. Will I use it in the kitchen or out in the field? What will I cut? Which do I value more, form or function?
Once I have answered the questions above, I can start on the actual pattern. I make stylistic choices following the desired aesthetic and functional decisions fitting its intended use, then I blend them together in the final design.
Next, I choose the materials to fit the scenario. The multitude of available steel alloys and handle compositions ensure that I can find the perfect fit for this individual knife.
In this time-consuming step I convert my 2-dimensional designs into 3-dimensional objects using intense power, abrasives, and heat to conform the various materials to my exact needs.
I enjoy this part of the process most of all because I can finally see the result of my commitment. Whether I made the knife to gracefully adorn mantels or forcefully sever boughs from trees, I take great satisfaction from knowing that it can now fulfill its purpose.
Every time I send out a knife, I have to make sure it is sharp. Aside from visual tests, my favorite method of testing sharpness is a paper-slice test because it effectively highlights the difference between a slightly sharp and a very sharp blade without damaging the blade finish.
I view knives as individual works of art as well as highly functional tools. The astronomical variety of materials and finishes alone sets each knife apart, and I love creating new combinations with each project.
I love making knives, and I hope to someday make this a full-time business. The vast number of techniques, tools, and materials fuels my passion for this craft, and I cannot wait to continue my journey.
Thankfully, I have no more knives for sale at the moment! I have future plans to make a new batch of fixed blade hunter-style knives and possibly a small run of folders, but at the moment both are still in the design phase. Feel free to explore the images of the folder and the fixed blade below!
I offer orders for custom knives and small sets. If you would like to order one of my knives, please contact me at will@willestesknives.com. If you want to see more of my work, check out my public Instagram account @willestesknives. Thank you!
